The world goes through big social and economic changes. What, in your opinion, motivates staff nowadays?

Due to a massive generational change the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation has changed significantly in recent years. The motivation used to focus on monetary incentives. Today the paradigm has changed. New generation is more interested in a work-life balance. We have noticed that more and more candidates are looking for flexible working hours and remote work.

If we talk more specifically about motivational techniques, which ones would you recommend?

As I said, employees are attracted by flexible hours, remote work and KPIs (rather than fixed number of working hours). Thus, effective motivation techniques stem from these factors.

It’s also important to keep in mind that new generations are constantly seeking for new challenges and scenarios which enable them to grow personally and professionally. That’s why dynamic environments and employee development should be among the main priorities of HR managers today.

The borderline between motivation and manipulation is very thin. How do you tell the difference between these two?

Each employee has different interests and values, each one has their own motivational triggers. What is good for one is not good for all. That’s why employee motivation requires individual approach and the question about manipulation becomes tricky.

It’s interesting that employees often need new challenges and stimulus in their work environments to feel a part of the project, a part of the working process. Manipulation is another matter since not all employees usually act the same way. There are individuals who tend to pursuit self-interest and take advantage of any situation. In these circumstances, HR managers should be very cautious and take actions so that the work of the whole team is not effected.

What books or other information resources on this subject would you recommend to our readers?

I would recommend "The Twelve Legacies of Steve Jobs" by Mario Escobar.
